Case – Harry Potter Book Launch
Key Points -
- A simultaneous release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at each distribution store in India on Saturday, July 21, 2007, dot at 6.01am
- Managed distribution of 256,000 books across 300 locations spread in 70 cities across India through 340 trucks, traversing a total of 1.05 million kms
- Legal embargo signed with Bloomsbury Publishing Plc., India distributor Penguin Books India teamed up with other distributors and intellectual property lawyers to prevent piracy and reprints
- Delivered at time when demand for, and popularity of, the Potter series surged the most in India, i.e., by 73%
- Fresh from printing in the UK, the books arrived in India on 9 July through a port in Mumbai, which were moved to an undisclosed Safexpress high-security warehouse
- Ample security and backup security present to ensure round-the-clock supervision of stock
- Stocks for one metropolitan area left in separate batches to ensure the entire quantity wouldn’t get stuck if problems arose
- Trucks were equipped with two drivers and one assistant, the vehicle fitted with global positioning system tracking devices
- Exact position of each truck was monitored continuously to guarantee the trucks did not stray from their prescribed route or halted in unverified areas
- Books were not shown to anyone before its release, not even to Penguin
- In some crises situations, company trucks ran into a landslide in Shillong, and a special jeep was arranged to transport the books. In another, a truck got stuck near Kochi because of construction and heavy rain. Eventually, Safexpress worked with the army to arrange an escort vehicle through the jungle to arrive in time
- At 6 pm Friday evening, operations got under way to get the books delivery-ready
- Early morning on Saturday, the books were dispatched amidst high security across all locations in specifically assigned vehicles, to ensure delivery at 6am on Saturday. A team of eight people monitored the first phase of the final delivery. At 6 am Saturday, the books went on sale
- Have done it several times and each time ‘secrecy’ was taken very seriously. Even the truck drivers, security guards and other employees handling storage and transport were not aware of the merchandise contained within the boxes, at least not until its final release
Specialized Equipment Delivery
